I love the premise of a black day.
I am of course made up of many a feather in that colour.
The 13th day that falls on Friday.
It always brings luck into this Birdies world.
And sadly, the only one this year.
I met with an old client who insisted she buy me breakfast.
We nibbled on some yummies from Spoonful.
Watermelon in Winter time really is quite the sweet treat.

I then went on and searched for yarn for samples.
For the Claude (and the Egg) range.
And managed to get some gorgeous samples indeed for free.
And then.
A delightful invitation for lunch.
Was offered from the divine Miss Mak!
And so Birdie sat in the new Cooper and Milla.

Dining on orecchiette mushroom and basil pasta.

It was consumed quicker than i could take a snap.

After all, watermelon really is only water.

Lovely beverages they did serve us too.

Miss Mak will understand!

Then after a browse and a coffee at Grace we were both off.

Miss Mak did spoil this Birdie indeed.

A phone call from a keen stockist of the new baby range was had.
And then Birdie had to break this to Miss Clues.
Time to get those needles clacking!
The deadline now looms.

my dear friend Miss T has made quite the trip to the harbour city.
a city not unlike that in the story about that girl with the red shoes and the scruffy pooch.
never really been a fan.
of the city not the movie.
it's the weather you see.
can't be anywhere that humidity lives.
makes my feathers way too limp.
and that makes a grumpy birdie.
ANYWAY.

in Windsor.
with Mushrooms Avocado Sourdough and the most heavenly soft Feta this Birdie has ever let enter her beak.
and of course, coffee.
thus began the day of reconnaissance.
fabric stores with their offerings for Claude (the Bird) WOMAN.
many a fabric store.
with many an offering too.
a visit to see the most lovely Goldilocks.
who updated me on my nephews antics while his Mama is away.
don't you just love his incredible face?

and Mama, he has been quite the lovely boy too.

(apart from the bonito flake massacre).

gave Auntie Birdie some delightful Eskimo smooches.

then off to have some afternoon tea at Atomica Caffe.

this time Birdie had honeydew green tea.

And this Orange yum yum!

And it was - along with Clues lightest quince friande.

Just the sustenance we need for out next fabric store.

then our trip home via woolly yarn shops.

buy the time we reached our front door, even duck cluck was exhausted. but still smiling.

as both Birdie and Cluesy Muse were also.

then this darling little creature greeted Mama with a kiss.

after a very exciting evening last night and a morning of baking (see below) i thought i would get some Vitamin D and promptly took myself off to see this exhibition.
it was brilliant.
as I had expected.
pity i had to share it with so many.
the only crowds i enjoy are those at my place of worship.
otherwise i prefer my air to be rather independent of others.

this time we visited Auntie P at her cottage rather than her studio. this visit really didn't impress my nephew who spent most of the visit underneath the chair on the stairs...not that Indigo seemed to care. she spied a long golden haired beauty.

as the Claude (and the Egg) baby range starts to take shape (one of the first samples is above) it reminded me of a discussion i had with some gorgeous friends of mine about the responsibility of where a garment is made and how quick companies are to send their product overseas to increase their bottom line. Which then lead to a discussion of travel and ethics. I've always been an advocate of speaking out for others. (ask my mother and the nuns who forever sent me to the school principal - which became a regular past time in my school life - but that is for another blog).

There are many choices we as adults make during our daily lives and some we aren't brave enough to face. Two of my very special friends, Michelle and Mark, are prime examples in standing tall for those that are less fortunate than they and fiercely protective for those that they love.

it's very rare that the Birdie gets to go to church during the day time and especially a Saturday but yesterday was quite the experience. it was rather warm sitting amoungst the congregation but I still could have used the dress above the keep me warm after the service had ended. Well, 81,000 worshippers do generate quite the heat...

and now we sit a top the tree looking down our beaks at those who dare to challenge.
beware.
the beak is black.
and is razor sharp.

like the seasons who turn the trees from fully shaded umbrellas to naked bark it has been such a delight walking to and from the nest in this brisk winter weather. But today was special and Birdie got lots of vitamin D.

it's also been a big few weeks for the Claude and I.
there are some wonderful surprises in store for those devoted Claude fans...but you know this Birdie never reveals anything until it's time too.

you'll all just have to be patient.
but change is coming...

the two babies at the Claude home nest are going through a hibernation of some sort at the moment and that means that their coats have become quite the smell of mouse. so Sunday was indeed the day for a quick wash, but not the full kit and caboodle. just a little warm damp flannel infused with lavender oil and voila.
damp fur one minute...then sun dried. on the Eames of course!!

and watching my beloved on the box with moving pictures, doesn't mean i don't have to make an effort. this Gaultier ensemble was snapped up quite quickly while holding onto these Rykiel lips at century 21 in New York many moons ago...

lucky for this Birdie those Yankie Doodles don't understand the Dandy of the French! and sadly for those fellow birdie Swans they should have just stayed swimming around the harbour bridge...maybe those Eagles should stay in Perth next week!

when two old friends combine

i don't quite know what has happened to this past week. many changes have occured. some challenges quite trying for this Birdie while others have been quite astounding (see post below). in fact, i don't really know where the first six months of this year have gone. but rather than become reflective on the months since past i decided to focus the mind by making a new prop for the nest. making an old chair that used to seat a dear old friend snuggly and warm with an old blankie. with enough fabric left over to make a little pillow perhaps...a task for another day.

Winter is really a good time to visit Claude.
this past Saturday was a day filled with many a visitor who enjoyed the most delicious raspberry chocolate brownies this Birdie has ever made. Of course, the white chocolate isn't that great for you but when drunk with green tea, it cancels out the naughty.

as a Birdie I know it's very important to keep ones eggs warm.
but I'm starting to become grumpy with the Birdies of the female variety who live in my neighbourhood. and a grumpy Birdie is really not good for anyone.
So with Winter actually approaching in less than a few hours listen up.
i don't want to see any more eggs on display.
not in a singlet, nor on the tram.
not wearing a v-neck t-shirt, while pushing your pram.
or the tube top that i witnessed today. Really. a pink tube top.
teamed with, might i add, ski boots.
they grow them classy around here.
either go to Aspen, Bulla or please, jump into a volcano.
stop disrupting the joy of my favourite time of year with your bare skin.

grand plans meringued

i had grand plans to spend the day doing all things Claude today.
Rita and I ventured out in the crispness of this morning for a walk and a peek at Matilda's Market. and after being completely overwhelmed by the people and underwhelmed by the product we took ourselves off for some coffee and cake. well she was good and had savoury. i of course had to have the sugar.
it was a lovely way to spend the morning. i left inspired and ready to be productive. and then I walked past Phillippa's who were celebrating their 15th birthday. and in the window were Lemon Meringue Pies. So Rita and I walked home and all i could think about was a Lemon Meringue Pie. I arrived home from my walk, checked the pantry and headed out for the ingredients.
i had grand plans to spend the day doing all things Claude today.
but instead.
i had a day doing all things Birdie.
making a Lemon Meringue Pie.
and then eating it.

there's always tomorrow!

i got to sneak out to wish her the happiest birthday at her party this afternoon.

what a day it was in the nest today. being the true lifestyle store we have classes of Yoga at the back of our building taken by Miss Fiona. She is currently doing a boot camp all week so there are two back to back classes each morning so the Orange Yum Yum and i get to enjoy cups of green tea and Birdies special cake (which might I say barely had enough time to cook this morning - such was the lateness of my morning). We also had several of our favourite Claudette's drop by so i was quite the morning. The afternoon involved a photo shoot with my sweet friend Tracey and gorgeous Kit, our amazing photographer friend doing shots of her fabulous Tram Banners. Followed by more tea and cake and a quick visit by darling girl before the Orange Yum Yum and I decided it was time to re-merchandise the nest. Amazingly,we managed to get much done in the last hour of the day..including the bed WHICH i did manage not to nap in. Might leave that one for tomorrow.

sensing that i may be less than impressed after returning from said place of worship last night, Indigo failed to even great me at the door, which of course was the right choice while her sister, Chyka, had fashioned an offering on the bed. And yes, there are two small Easter eggs that she had obviously put away for such an evening...how could i stay unhappy after that?

i don't know what it is about those felines but it seems that Birdies of the black and while variety can't help but fall for their charms. I'm often found going a little gooey when those eyes stare back into mine as my friends did this past Friday evening under lights at my place of worship. I didn't even bristle when one of them asked me what school i had just come from. Clearly the colours were an issue for this particular cat. I've never understood that hoop costume they wear. Just makes them all look like a bunch of barrels to me.

an invitation to an art opening never goes astray in the nest of the Birdie and the Fox. especially when one lives with quite the art critic. but as this dear creature is a darling friend, we couldn't have counted the days down any quicker in anticipation to her opening night. and she didn't disappoint. for those of you who have visited the nest over the past few years, you will be familiar with her incredible work. i have been witness to many a grown woman standing in silence as their inner child is revealed. the room was certainly filled with many a familiar face and Peter spoke quite proudly of his darling girl. I loved the spontaneity in which Elise addressed her audience and realised it must have been a bitter sweet evening having lived with these creatures for many a year and having to bid them an emotional, albeit fond farewell as they were adopted into new homes.

This painting of Rhino and Birdie titled "The Conference" struck a chord with this Birdie indeed. I think it's because no matter the size, no matter what the circumstance, a Birds opinion is one of importance and should be treated with the highest regard. I may be small but I'm no push over. I may look sweet but my beak is razor sharp. I think Rhino gets the message.

I had quite the lovely day outside the nest today working on some things Claude and a few things Storytelling. Storytelling is my graphic design business responsible for all the emails that you receive about (the Bird). As well as work for Claude i work for other clients too. I manage to fit this into my schedule between 1am to 3.45am just after my mouse hunting with Chyka and before my snoring competition with Indigo. She always wins! So here are a few photographs of the day...all random including the gorgeous one above from Miss Long Long herself after a trip away from the Cottage.

i left the nest yesterday afternoon to forage for some things i need to start making the Claude (the Bird) range.
the trip involved taking HRH (Her Royal Highness) along to meet her Auntie Penelope. now this is one royal that doesn't like sitting in a car, waiving ones paw at the common people, unless she is sitting on my lap and then things get out of hand because she wants to drive and well that's not good for anyone.
instead all she does is complain about my driving and as she is quite the front seat driver, the language she uses would make a wharfie blush!
once she arrived as Aunt Pens, who might I say failed to provide any of the listed requirements one needs to entertain a Royal Blue Blood, she did settle down after again spouting her colourful language of disapproval at being treated so poorly.
a good half hour brush and a cup of tea and well the little royal was quite in need of a shut eye. it was quite the blissful car ride home, apart from the snoring that is!

as I'm often shop Birdie, i don't get much of a chance to explore other retail spaces. and as I wasn't in the nest today, i managed to squeeze in a visit to two of my favourite local bookstores. it was a day to buy some books for research, to enjoy in the afternoon, with a cup of tea and my freshly baked fig biscuits. a little gift to inspire my mind.
but today i found the experience quite, well, utterly devastating.
i encountered dispassionate assistants, more concerned with being interrupted from their conversation with each other than to be of any real help.
the saddest experience of all was from the book shop that I frequent the most because i choose to support local independent stores than the larger discount chains. i knew what i was looking for so didn't require any help. but as i made my way to the counter, the first girl didn't even look up as she counted the till receipts, while the other snatched the book out of my hand as if my late sale would upset the counting already being done. the frail woman who stood behind me had been waiting patiently for some minutes before she was noticed and having been advised of the price of a DVD she had been interested in, was promptly left to her own devices and i watched the confidence to ask another question quickly disappear. instead she slumped a little, she had just wanted a little conversation, to be acknowledged. but the two girls were too obsessed with counting the till. At 5.35pm. The shop closes at 6pm. When the till should ACTUALLY be reconciled.
i've not felt that kind of heartbreak in a while. this gentle woman may have chosen many a reason to not buy the DVD at that moment. but the sales assistant failed to offer her any kind of kindness after the price had been offered. she ignored the chance to make a connection to another person with whom had taken a great deal of care to enter the store considering the awkwardness of her walking frame. i wanted to reach over the counter and throttle her.
i felt an overwhelming urge to scream at them but turned to the woman and said "what a gorgeous evening it was to be out". and she replied "indeed" and smiled. we both turned around and headed out the door.
i don't know what is happening to the world in which i live in.
but here is some advice for those of you who choose a profession in the service industry, (and I'm qualified to give you all advise because I am one of them). learn to smile, learn to engage and leave your sullen unhelpful attitudes outside.
every day is an experience and a chance to make a difference in the lives of not only other people but more importantly yourself.

although some days more so than others.
but i always love when the day is capped off by a visit by special Bird friends.
especially those who were visitors of the old nest.
the most gorgeous Lyn and Emily arrived today just before the day had ended and it filled my heart with joy.
to share the end of my week with these girls capped off a truly lovely week at Claude. it really is so wonderful to have such special birds in ones company indeed. to all that visited this past week, bless you.
and for the visitors to come...bring Birdie a toffee apple.

it's no secret that this Birdie loves her coffee. actually really likes her coffee. i think it's easy to love something but to actually like it, well that's the highest praise of all. the coffee starts off as a very weak latte in the morning and gets much stronger as the day goes on finishing up with a short black in the very late evening hours. my Birdie clock certainly works on European time.
the Hookturn girlies have delivered more of their fabulous BYO 8oz coffee cups AND also, the 12oz size. For those of you who need a little more hitch in your giddyup!

those of you who know this Birdie are more than aware that they only colour palette she does wear is Black and White.
sometimes all black. rarely all white. but mostly Black and White.
well that is all about to change. for 20 minutes next Friday evening, Birdie will become Pink. Think flamingo Pink.
i'll be joining 14,000 women and men in support of Field of Women Live 2010. it already fills the skin beneath my feathers with goose bumps.
i'll be going in honour of beautiful Celeste and my dear Uncle Roy.
Fox will be going for his dear sister Narelle.
and this event will take place next Friday night.

today at the nest we had a photo shoot. we used the youngest orange Nina and the yum yum mummy orange too. the shoot was truly lovely and many a gorgeous photograph was taken of these breathtaking creatures. here is gorgeous image for you all to enjoy...

today i was away from the House of Claude doing things that there never seem to be enough hours in the day to do. A meeting with Miss Luna, another with Miss Twiggywinkle and my gorgeous fellow Birdie Vel. Alot more seemed to be squeezed into this day but after a chat with Miss Long Longs I realised I needed another four hours before 5pm. And it was very close to 4pm. *Sigh*
Then a spot of painting for some props which will feature in a new window display at the Claude of Orange on Friday. And that's when the day went all pear-shaped.
The Indigo Rex decided to inspect the job. Worker she is not. CEO material she is, actually dictator is more like it. After too close an inspection I noticed this on the pavers and well, SOMEONE had to have a bath. Paint on three paws and snout.
Then the rain came and well, Birdie decided to call it a day.
Time for Dinner.
Read some emails.
Desert.
Reply to some emails.
And then sleep.
And do it all again tomorrow...but this time I'll be back in the nest.

we get all sorts visiting the House of Claude. remember these two gorgeous creatures who decided to do some secret men's business. well today these two birds decided to have a glass of alcohol and smoke outside the Orange Claude this afternoon. Just your usual lush behaviour in Armadale really. Usually it's G&T time (it was 3pm after all) but bubbly on a Monday just had to do. It was all we had. As you can see the Bamm Bamm Orange has created another gorgeous seat for the shop. And it can comfortably fit three birds with storage to put another body inside it or your case of wine and fags....
After these two birds left Papa Birdie arrived looking for a morsel or two. After eating the banana that Birdie offered up to him, he dug into some worms.
We do really welcome everyone at the nest. Especially the feathered variety. Anything we can do to appease the Magpie Gods!

sundays with the fox

the weather of the day dictated what was actually achieved this Sunday and while it was hot the Fox and Birdie did manage to get a few things done that haven't been tended to in a long time. working for oneself involves many hours of every day so i scheduled in some time to touch the earth and re-equate myself with the garden. the loveliest surprise was the family garden we had planted in January. all of the plants represent beings in our life whose physical bodies have left us but their memory is still ever present. a joyous Sunday indeed...

back to Bedrock...

my Claudette and Claude readers are quite delicious. some of the responses I got to the post were hilarious. One reader decided the creature was a rabbit. Another decided that the creature was indeed a griffin. i'm not sure about what to say about the Claude who thought it was a bird...with those feet??

anyway.

in actual fact the creature we speak of is Indigo. and she is a Cornish Rex.

and this is her sister Chyka (who is the very shy member of our family) and also a Cornish Rex.

after being so ill for this week i've become a reflective Birdie. the seasons are changing and my favourite time of the year is approaching. and it makes me think about the earth that we inhabit and taking the time to be quiet. i find it very hard to just sit and listen to what is going on around me and where the universe is guiding me. but Birdies can change too...but i still intend to be silly.

i have had enough of this humid autumn weather. not that great when you are freezing cold one minute and then sweating up your own humid storm the next. however, it is autumn and damn it - i was determined to wear a scarf. but this isn't just any old scarf. this amazing neck warmer came from the delightful Longs Legs herself. or as i like to call her Long Longs. it looked quite spectacular too...really helped to accentuate, i mean, enhance, i mean look. my neck is swollen so this gorgeous scarf isn't going to make it look thinner, you know. that's why its been photographed on Levine. her neck is perfectly thin. mind you she has some fabric eating virus so anything looks great on her.
so another day, another penicillin injection.
oh and if you want to order a scarf contact Long Longs yourself...for some reason she isn't talking to me....

it seems that Mr. Carrot has crossed the border again. This time he has been spotted by a Queensland Birdie watcher who snapped this photograph of him at The Big Pineapple. Perhaps the most disturbing element to this sighting is the friend he was spotted with.

Leather Nose.

Now while Mr. Carrot is quite a dangerous orange alone, with his sidekick Leather Nose, it's a whole new issue.

Obviously Leather Nose was stocking up on Pineapple Juice to help with his problematic intestinal worms before the two of them hit the road again.

i have enjoyed receiving many emails about how mummy and daddy magpie are going and from all accounts they are doing very well. the fox has been away and as you know i've been holed up in the inside nest with tonsils the size of bricks so i have been unable to get a closer look. so until i'm able to get a closer look here are a few more photographs of the nest for you all.

its seems the Claude's and Claudette's are keen to make sure the community is safe and have since set up a very successful birdie watch for the whereabouts of Mr. Carrot. While the sightings of him have come from far and wide with even one American Claudette advising he was standing in line to get an Apple iPad (although the photo she provided was of an actual carrot standing in line??) to other rumours of him even sharing an apartment with Elvis...

The following photograph has been supplied to us by a Sydney Claude watcher. And i have to say it is quite shocking.

It seems that Mr. Carrot has escaped across state borders. Fears are now held for the three bunnies in the Rabbit Protection Program within New South Wales. If you have any knowledge of his whereabouts please contact us. Stay tuned for further updates of Birdie watch!

AND
HE HAS BEEN ADOPTED OUT ALONG WITH THE OTHER BUNNIES WHOSE PICTURES HAVE BEEN INTENTIONALLY BLURRED FOR LEGAL REASONS. IE. THEY HAVE HAD TO ENTER THE RABBIT PROTECTION PROGRAM.

and suddenly in the nest of Claude order has been restored. the remaining handful of rabbits have returned to eating baby carrots and doing yoga. we've since realised that it only takes one bad carrot to ruin the whole bunch. so while we are all relieved at Claude, these bunnies are now in the wider community!

one has gone to Queensland.

it's all about the eggs...

ever since the Birdie met the Fox we have had the Easter tradition of egg hunting. Before Birdie met the Fox I was obviously out of favour with the Rabbit as I didn't receive any eggs from him at all. Not even when I was a little girl. But Fox had a chat with said Bunny and Bunny said he had just misplaced my paperwork when I was born and well, it's all been sorted out now.
He really does make up for all those years lost too, although I do have to wear a pair of his special Rabbit ears whilst hunting for the eggs he has hidden. They get kind of itchy but it's worth the discomfort for the loot.
The egg hunt today was quite short as this Birdie has a lovely Easter head cold. So bending down to pick up the eggs resulted in Birdie falling and squashing several so it was left to the Fox to find them....and Bunny was very generous. He had granted me the ultimate wish this year.

The Haigh egg..I mean..eggs.
